Excerpt:

When he came off the plane he was wearing aviators, a black button-up, dark wash jeans and those Converse shoes that I hated on anyone but him. He lifted his sunglasses and broke into a smile as I ran into his arms. He dropped his bag and spun me around as soon as I was in his arms.

"How did you know?" he asked as he set me on the ground, his hands tangled in my hair.

"You told me what flight you were on."

He shook his head and held my chin in his hand. "I've always wanted to have someone to wait for me—to spin them around and then do this."

He pulled my chin up and tilted it until our lips touched—soft at first and then the reminder that we hadn't kissed in two months came over us. The only thing that could pull us apart was the whistle that echoed through the terminal and then the incessant flash of cameras.

"Crap," Evan hissed, his forehead pressed to mine with his hands on either side of my face so they couldn't get a good picture of me. "You don't want them to know who you are yet, do you?"

I shook my head but said with my voice shaking, "I knew the risk."

He swallowed and then smiled. "Tilt your head down so that your hair covers your face from view."

I did what he said and then felt his hands slip the glasses over my eyes. As I looked up his cocky half-smile made me laugh.

"They look a hell of a lot hotter on you," he teased, throwing his duffel bag over his shoulder and wrapping his arm around my waist so that his fingers were in the front pocket of my jeans.

"I don't think that's possible," I replied, breathless from the feel of his touch as my t-shirt rose, exposing the flesh of my hip to his warmth.

"It’s very possible with you," he whispered into my ear as we made our way past the flashing cameras. "I can't wait to see the tabloids on this one."

"It would be much better if we did something dangerous, like locked ourselves in a public restroom."

He looked down at me through his eyebrows. "Really? That's not all that clean."

"I haven't seen you in two months," I said, turning and stopping in front of him. "I've thought about you every single day. Do you know what that does to a girl? Especially when pictures of you half-naked are strewn across the internet."

"I see you found those." His voice was edged with amusement, but his face was red in embarrassment.

I pulled on the collar of his shirt before leaning up on my toes and whispering into his ear, "I need some real ones."

"What do you need pictures of when I'm here?" he answered, his breath hot on my chin, voice seductive.

"I need you to burn the images into my mind then," I said before gently biting his ear.

His free hand drifted down the small of my back to my rear pocket. "I thought I already had."

"Mhmm...I need more."

"I have to admit I kind of enjoy this." He smirked down at me. "But teasing me like this is just cruel."

"Does the rental car have blacked out windows?" I asked over my shoulder as I turned.

I watched his Evan's Adam’s apple rise and fall. "I sure hope so."

Tour Stop: Russian Dolls by Cristelle Comby

Alexandra Neve is a student at University College London whose world suddenly falls apart. When her best friend jumps from the university’s rooftop, she can’t stop herself from asking, ‘Why?’ The police rule her friend’s death a suicide and for them the case is closed — so whom can she turn to for help.

Sometimes the person you need the most is the one you least expect to find, and in this case it’s none other than Ashford Egan, a blind middle-aged history professor, who’s more willing than most to listen to what she has to say.

Neve and Egan are as different as they come. She’s restless, careless at times, and fearless when the need arises, while he’s almost the complete opposite: a deep thinker with an analytical mind, a highly rational and collected individual.

As they enter the violent world of the Russian mafia, they must overcome their differences and learn to work together. It’s their only chance if they want to survive.

About the Author:

Cristelle Comby was born and raised in the French-speaking area of Switzerland, somewhere between Geneva and Lausanne, where she still resides. Thanks to her insatiable thirst for American and British action films and television dramas, her English is fluent. She attributes to her origins her ever-peaceful nature and her undying love for chocolate. She has a passion for art, which also includes an interest in drawing and acting.

Russian Dolls is her first new-adult novel, and she’s hard at work on the next titles in the series.

Review, Guest Post, and MAJOR Giveaway!!!: The Space Between by Kristie Cook

We are so excited today to welcome one of our absolute favorite people to Comfortably Read, author Kristie Cook! We have a guest post and MAJOR giveaways!!! But first, Kate's review of The Space Between!

** !! Kate's Review !! **

I’ve always wanted to go to Italy. Kristie Cook took me there and made me feel as if I had been there. On cobbled roads and in the theatre where Leni Drago fulfills her ambition as a dancer, having a final farewell drink with her colleagues and heading off to meet up with her Uncle back in Georgia. On her return though Uncle Theo was nowhere to be seen and the house was empty except for one thing - a journal that can’t be opened. I travelled with Leni on more than the train.

Leni is one of the reasons I loved this book, because her feelings are so raw and clear and true. Not only does she make me see the things the way she sees, she makes me feel the things she feels. There's a lot more going on than just a missing Uncle and an unopened journal, and Leni starts to unravel a whole new world. A man called Jeric Winters is looking to complete his puzzle. Very few people have ever been close to Jeric; he is a “hit-it-and-quit-it-type, struggling for people to understand him. He has gotten used to his own company. The mystery about Jeric Winters is another of the reasons I wanted to keep turning the pages.

Jacey is an 1980’s kind of girl and is in the process of sorting out a derelict building that had been left to her. While Jacey is trying to determine what to do with this old rundown building. Micah turns up, offering to help. One of my favourite quotes from this section is “Ah, smart-ass, ex-punk girl makes tough marine a little soft?”. You just can’t help but love Jacey and Micah.

The Space Between is filled with interesting characters; they make it all seem just as real as the people in your own hometown. One I found really interesting was Bex; she is described as a heavy punk, hot pink hair and heavy makeup. Her character had me engrossed.

Jacey, Micah and Bex are all fascinating, but I have to say Jeric stands out for me the most. You get the idea that Jeric is a bit of a player with no feelings which might change when he follows his “pull”. This has to be one of a few books that have me making facial expressions with quotes and just the book really. I am impressed and love the fact that some of the characters are in it for only a short amount of time, yet I feel I know all of them and they are described very well and I have an image of all of them. I have laughed at the words humongous and befuddled, I don’t know why but they make me laugh and in the context used it is hilarious.

This book had me addicted from start to finish and only one of a few books I have read twice. I am looking forward to the next part of The Book of Phoenix by Kristie Cook!!!

My favourite quotes from The Space Between:

“What an ass “Alberto muttered.
“ Rude, yes, but I don’t know if I’d go that far.”
“No, I mean what an ass that man has.”

AND

“He’s straighter than a nun’s ruler and can’t take his eyes off you.”

I give The Space Between 5 hearts! Highly recommended!!

And now to hear from Kristie on one of our favorite subjects... ;-)

Meet Sammy and Ghost From The Space Between
Guest Post by Kristie Cook

What would life be like without pets? Pretty lonely and boring. I was an Air Force brat as a child, moving a lot and living mostly in apartments, which meant I went a few years without a pet. I constantly begged for a dog to love and to love me back. Being an only child isn’t as lonely when you have a pet by your side. Finally, Mom and I got a dog when I was 12, and she lived into my adult years.

We’ve almost always had a dog in the family I’ve created. As well as fish, guinea pigs, a chinchilla and cats. Not counting all the farm animals we used to have. Pets teach so much about life, responsibility and love, so it’s been important to me to have them in our lives.

I’m always happy when characters in books have pets. But I’m even happier when they play a bigger role than simply existing only because it seems the character should have a fur-baby (although that’s okay, too, because we should all have fur-babies!). Once I created Sasha in the Soul Savers series, I’ve always known she would come to play a big role. Sammy and Ghost in The Space Between also serve a purpose in The Book of Phoenix series, although I can’t say what yet.

So I thought it would be fun to interview them so you could get to know them a little more. It went something like this:

Me: Hi, Sammy and Ghost! How are you today? *gives each a scratch behind the ears*
Sammy *holds paw out to shake*: Woof! Woof-woof woof!  Woof woof. Woooof! *slurp*
(Translation: Great! Awesome as can be! Can I lick your face? Do you want to play? Pleeeease? I love you! *licks my face*)
Ghost: --- *yawn*
(Translation: -.-)

Me: Um. Good. Yes, Sammy, we’ll play ball in a minute. First, what can you tell me about your owners?
Sammy: Erf? Woof. Woof-woof-woof-woooof!
(Translation: Jacey? My girl. I love her more than anything. She feeds me and plays with me and takes me for rides in the car. We went on a long trip and then played in the water.)
Ghost: Meow. Meow. *prrrrr*
(Translation: Leni feeds me well enough, I suppose, although it’s not caviar. I let her touch me once in a while. Her legs might be nice to rub myself on, when I feel like it. Her curly head makes a nice bed. *purr*)

Me: So what do you in this story?
Sammy: Woof woof woof woof woof woof woof. *pant* Woof woof woof woof woof! *pant pant* Woof woof!
(Translation: I am the protector! The guard! I go where Jacey goes, fighting off the bad guys and keeping her safe. I growl and bite and jump and save her because that’s my job!)
Ghost: Meow meow meow. Meow.
(Translation: I might help out in a fight. I may or may not be helping out in other ways. I cannot say anymore or I’ll have to kill you.)

Me: Wow. Okay. Well, thank you, both, for joining me here today. I’m sure this has been, er, enlightening for the readers.
Sammy: Woof woof woof woof woof *slurp* woof *runs off with tail wagging*
(Translation: I love you! I love readers! I’m a good boy! Can we play now? Please? *licks my face again* I’ll go get my ball! *runs off*)
Ghost: ---
(Translation: -.- *struts off*

So, yeah, not quite what I’d hoped for, but pretty much what we can expect. You can get to know Sammy and Ghost and their owners better in The Space Between, Part One of The Book of Phoenix.
