We are so excited today to welcome one of our absolute favorite people to Comfortably Read, author Kristie Cook! We have a guest post and MAJOR giveaways!!! But first, Kate's review of The Space Between!
** !! Kate's Review !! **
I’ve always wanted to go to Italy. Kristie Cook took me there and made me feel as if I had been there. On cobbled roads and in the theatre where Leni Drago fulfills her ambition as a dancer, having a final farewell drink with her colleagues and heading off to meet up with her Uncle back in Georgia. On her return though Uncle Theo was nowhere to be seen and the house was empty except for one thing - a journal that can’t be opened. I travelled with Leni on more than the train.
Leni is one of the reasons I loved this book, because her feelings are so raw and clear and true. Not only does she make me see the things the way she sees, she makes me feel the things she feels. There's a lot more going on than just a missing Uncle and an unopened journal, and Leni starts to unravel a whole new world. A man called Jeric Winters is looking to complete his puzzle. Very few people have ever been close to Jeric; he is a “hit-it-and-quit-it-type, struggling for people to understand him. He has gotten used to his own company. The mystery about Jeric Winters is another of the reasons I wanted to keep turning the pages.
Jacey is an 1980’s kind of girl and is in the process of sorting out a derelict building that had been left to her. While Jacey is trying to determine what to do with this old rundown building. Micah turns up, offering to help. One of my favourite quotes from this section is “Ah, smart-ass, ex-punk girl makes tough marine a little soft?”. You just can’t help but love Jacey and Micah.
The Space Between is filled with interesting characters; they make it all seem just as real as the people in your own hometown. One I found really interesting was Bex; she is described as a heavy punk, hot pink hair and heavy makeup. Her character had me engrossed.
Jacey, Micah and Bex are all fascinating, but I have to say Jeric stands out for me the most. You get the idea that Jeric is a bit of a player with no feelings which might change when he follows his “pull”. This has to be one of a few books that have me making facial expressions with quotes and just the book really. I am impressed and love the fact that some of the characters are in it for only a short amount of time, yet I feel I know all of them and they are described very well and I have an image of all of them. I have laughed at the words humongous and befuddled, I don’t know why but they make me laugh and in the context used it is hilarious.
This book had me addicted from start to finish and only one of a few books I have read twice. I am looking forward to the next part of The Book of Phoenix by Kristie Cook!!!
My favourite quotes from The Space Between:
“What an ass “Alberto muttered.
“ Rude, yes, but I don’t know if I’d go that far.”
“No, I mean what an ass that man has.”
AND
“He’s straighter than a nun’s ruler and can’t take his eyes off you.”
I give The Space Between 5 hearts! Highly recommended!!
And now to hear from Kristie on one of our favorite subjects... ;-)
Meet Sammy and Ghost From The Space Between
Guest Post by Kristie Cook
What would life be like without pets? Pretty lonely and
boring. I was an Air Force brat as a child, moving a lot and living mostly in
apartments, which meant I went a few years without a pet. I constantly begged
for a dog to love and to love me back. Being an only child isn’t as lonely when
you have a pet by your side. Finally, Mom and I got a dog when I was 12, and
she lived into my adult years.
We’ve almost always had a dog in the family I’ve created. As
well as fish, guinea pigs, a chinchilla and cats. Not counting all the farm
animals we used to have. Pets teach so much about life, responsibility and
love, so it’s been important to me to have them in our lives.
I’m always happy when characters in books have pets. But I’m
even happier when they play a bigger role than simply existing only because it
seems the character should have a fur-baby (although that’s okay, too, because
we should all have fur-babies!). Once I created Sasha in the Soul Savers series,
I’ve always known she would come to play a big role. Sammy and Ghost in The Space Between also serve a purpose in
The Book of Phoenix series, although I can’t say what yet.
So I thought it would be fun to interview them so you could
get to know them a little more. It went something like this:
Me: Hi, Sammy and Ghost! How are you today? *gives each a
scratch behind the ears*
Sammy *holds paw out to shake*: Woof! Woof-woof woof! Woof woof. Woooof! *slurp*
(Translation: Great! Awesome as can be! Can I lick your
face? Do you want to play? Pleeeease? I love you! *licks my face*)
Ghost: --- *yawn*
(Translation: -.-)
Me: Um. Good. Yes, Sammy, we’ll play ball in a minute.
First, what can you tell me about your owners?
Sammy: Erf? Woof. Woof-woof-woof-woooof!
(Translation: Jacey? My girl. I love her more than anything.
She feeds me and plays with me and takes me for rides in the car. We went on a
long trip and then played in the water.)
Ghost: Meow. Meow. *prrrrr*
(Translation: Leni feeds me well enough, I suppose, although
it’s not caviar. I let her touch me once in a while. Her legs might be nice to
rub myself on, when I feel like it. Her curly head makes a nice bed. *purr*)
Me: So what do you in this story?
Sammy: Woof woof woof woof woof woof woof. *pant* Woof woof
woof woof woof! *pant pant* Woof woof!
(Translation: I am the protector! The guard! I go where
Jacey goes, fighting off the bad guys and keeping her safe. I growl and bite
and jump and save her because that’s my job!)
Ghost: Meow meow meow. Meow.
(Translation: I might help out in a fight. I may or may not
be helping out in other ways. I cannot say anymore or I’ll have to kill you.)
Me: Wow. Okay. Well, thank you, both, for joining me here
today. I’m sure this has been, er, enlightening for the readers.
Sammy: Woof woof woof woof woof *slurp* woof *runs off with
tail wagging*
(Translation: I love you! I love readers! I’m a good boy!
Can we play now? Please? *licks my face again* I’ll go get my ball! *runs off*)
Ghost: ---
(Translation: -.- *struts off*
So, yeah, not quite what I’d hoped for, but pretty much what we can expect. You can get to know Sammy and Ghost and
their owners better in The Space Between,
Part One of The Book of Phoenix.

After
a month-long dance tour through Italy, 20-year-old Leni Drago returns to
Georgia to care for her great-uncle, only to find him gone, the home they
shared empty and any evidence he ever existed wiped out. All that’s left is a
journal she can’t open.
Jeric
Winters has been searching for a piece of his past for over a year, only to
reach a dead-end in Georgia. When an urgent and magnetic pull draws him out of
his hotel room, he comes face-to-face with the beautiful dancer who’s been
haunting his dreams day and night.
Jeric’s
one to stay away from—a bad-boy, hit-it-and-quit-it type—but Leni can’t escape
the fervent feelings between them. As their own existences begin to crumble
around them and shadowy forms that are more monsters than men attack, they
realize there’s more to the connection between them than physical fascination.
To
solve the riddle their lives have become, they must embark on a journey that
requires them to face their pasts and release their true souls. And they must
do it fast—dark ones from another world are closing in, intent on killing them.
Permanently.
